SYNOPSIS
Persona Non Grata is a humorous drama about Laura who has distanced herself from her family in the countryside and has moved to Copenhagen to be a writer and live the bohemian lifestyle. When she is forced to return to her childhood home to participate in her brother’s wedding, she discovers that he is about to marry her worst childhood enemy, Catrine. Laura realizes that Catrine has taken over her place in the family and now she feels a strong need to get it back.
THE DIRECTOR: LISA JESPERSEN
Lisa Jespersen was born in the countryside of Denmark in 1988. Her interest in filmmaking grew as she attended the European Film College and later studied film directing at the National Film School of Denmark. She has made a handful of short films – all with an interest in the comic aspect of people’s existential crises. Her graduation film September received a lot of attention for its precise and very emphatic portrait of a woman in her sixties and the difficulties that come with that age. Persona non Grata is Lisa’s feature film debut, produced by Hyæne Film.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
“Persona Non Grata is a film about being the black sheep in your own family, and about outgrowing your roots. I wanted to explore the humour in how absurd we, as human beings, can behave against our closest relatives, and how we, in our struggle for recognition and love, end up insulting and hurting each other deeply. I myself grew up in the countryside and experience the large distance between my present artist/urban life and my past in the fields of my family of farmers. When I feel my roots stirring, I can start feeling wrong in the city, but when I return to our farm, I have become someone else and I can no longer speak the local dialect/lingo. This sense of being rootless and the lack of a place in this world were my first seeds in the creation of this film.”
