SYNOPSIS

Jan has been married to Gedda for 35 years. Gedda loves Jan so much that she smothers him: she picks out his clothing, his friends, his vacations and all their other activities. In an attempt to get some space Jan concocts a strange plan that literally transforms his marriage into a locked ward. Their daughter finds herself in a similar predicament with her exacting and jealous boyfriend. Both light-hearted and tragicomic, The Marriage Escape asks the question: how much love is too much?

“Herman Finkers wrote a clever and beautiful screenplay for this film: it poses the life questions the generation 50+ is struggling with, yet at the same time turns it into a light comedy. In addition, the combination of Ter Steege and Finkers provides a nuanced and catching performance: modest, realistic, with a poignancy that arises from the unexpectedly comic wayward truths in their work. Both understand the essence of Twente: most important is the silence between the words. De Beentjes Van Sint-Hildegard is not pure comedy. At every turn we hope to put a smile on the faces of our audience by showing the human imperfection of our characters. The miscommunication and secrets they hold for each other will cause uncomfortable yet comic relational situations. While watching, the viewer will discover the joke in everyday life.”
