Sixth day of the 22nd edition of the European Film Festival directed by Alberto La Monica, with the screening of Carlo Verdone’s new film, Si vive una volta sola, produced by Filmauro and Vision DIstribution and distributed by Amazon Prime Video. The screening will take place at Cinema Massimo, room 1, at 8.00 pm, in the presence of Verdone, who at the end will meet the audience.
As part of the Cinema & Reality section, the premiere of Centootto by Giuseppe Bellasalma, Michele Lipori, Claudio Paravati (2021, 50’). The documentary film, produced by Fai Cisl and Confronti, recounts the kidnapping of 18 fishermen from Mazara del Vallo in Libya, 40 miles from Benghazi, which took place in September 2020 in international waters and cost the crew 108 days of captivity. Testimonies from the fishermen, their families, the Mayor of Mazara del Vallo and the owner of one of the two fishing boats involved. A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow.
For the Lux Prize, Another Round (Denmark, Holland, Sweden 2020, 116’), which won at the EFA for Best European Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor (Mads Mikkelsen). Four forty-something teachers whose love lives and careers seem to have come to a standstill decide to test out a Norwegian psychiatrist’s theory that humans run a slight natural alcohol deficit of 0.05 % in their bloodstreams. Not only do they quickly make up the deficit; they overshoot it considerably!
For the European Comedy, My Cousin by Jan Kounen (Mon Cousin France, Belgium 2020, 104’). In order to sign the deal of the century, Pierre, a CEO, has to obtain the signature of his cousin Adrien, who owns 50% of his firm. Adrien, a sweet, idealistic dreamer, keeps delaying the moment of signing…
The tribute to István Szabó, Protagonist of European Cinema, goes on with the screening, in room 2 at 5.00 pm, of Confidence (1979, 102’), in which the director uses the Second World War as an epic background that changes the lives of his protagonists: Kata and János, strangers to each other, constrained to share a flat in the outskirts, aware that they need confidence to each other to be able to survive the situation emotionally…
In room 2 at 9.30 pm, 25 Fireman’s Street (1973, 97’). On a hot summer night, the apartment buildings in Fireman’s Street are about to be torn down to make way for the new Budapest. Although dilapidated and close to demolition, No. 25 is not unoccupied. It is still inhabited by a number of people who will spend the night remembering, dreaming, suffering nightmares.
As part of the tribute to Giovanna Ralli, Protagonist of Italian Cinema, the screening in room 3, at 9.00 pm, of The Escape (1964, 91’), the Paolo Spinola’s dazzling directorial debut, which openly deals with female homosexuality. Here Ralli plays Piera, an unsatisfied wife and daugther oppressed by the vitality of her mother, who hangs out with lovers much younger than her. The woman ends up going to a therapist. The turning point comes when she meets Luisa, a refined and clever interior designer whom she befriends in the hope of finally being understood…
The Golden Olive Tree Competition goes on with Runner by Andrius Blazevicius (Lithuania, Czech Republic 2021, 87’) in room 5, at 5.00 pm. Maria is decided to let nothing stop her from helping her boyfriend, who has disappeared. Grabbing at every clue about his whereabouts she embarks on a fast-paced odyssey through the city. A Q&A will follow.
At 9.00 pm, A Good Man by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar (France 2020, 108’), having its premiere at the European Film Festival and set for release in cinemas in France on the same day. Benjamin and Aude are enjoying their new life after moving to a new town. They have been deeply in love for six years, since they first met in a disco. But the desire to have a child completely upsets their balance and forces them to try and redefine their place and relationship with the world… a Q&A with the filmmaker will follow.
In room 4, starting from 5.00 pm, the scheduling of short films goes on.
