SINOPSIS
In Manchester, at the height of the economic crisis, Bob and his best friend Tommy do whatever they can to earn something to take home, including undeniably less-than-legal acts like stealing sheep, plumbing pipes or sods of grass from government lawns to sell to people who don’t ask too many questions. Bob also has a wife, Anne, who can’t keep a job because she’s rather unskilled, and a daughter, Coleen, who is about to receive her first communion and dreams of a brand-new white dress and a nice party. It is his little girl’s dream that prompts Bob to take out a loan, which is passed on to a local loan shark, not realizing how much trouble he is about to get into.
Nota critica
“As a radical leftist, Loach does not indulge in populist Manichaeism; he avoids polemical overstatements as well as the rigid structure of an argument, not sacrificing form for content even if his writing appears seemingly unpolished. (…) The level of cinematic development of ethical and social themes is extremely high. In an hour and a half, Loach and Allen manage to convey not only the economic crisis depicted by unemployment, poverty and frustrations, the right to work and a desire for justice, but also usury, drugs, declining values, the horrendous world of nightclubs and the future without ideals or hope for younger generations.” (Morando Morandini, Il Giorno, 24/10/1993)
